Brotherhood
Our Lady of Mercy
Foundation and History
The canonical procedures to establish the Brotherhood began in 1954, and the statutes were officially approved on March 25, 1955 by His Excellency BIshopManuel Hurtado y García.
As for its origin, it was conceived in the then Instituto Laboral de Tarazona (currently Tubalcaín Highschool) and it wanted to connect with the youth of Tarazona. For this reason, the Sisterhood of Our Lady of Mercy was popularly known as “la cofradía del Instituto”.
The original, from 1955, had the emblem embroidered on the front and the name of the Brotherhood and the date of its founding painted on the back. It was replaced in 2000 by a banner made of blue satin fabric with the emblem embroidered in gold.
CANONICAL SEAT
Tarazona Cathedral; Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows. Since 2012, after 30 years of restoration works in the Cathedral during which the processional float had to be kept in other churches of the city, the Brotherhood starts its processions from its canonical seat again.

PROCESSIONAL FLOAT
Our Lady of Sorrows, the “titular” of the eponymous Chapel in the Cathedral of Tarazona. It is one of the most outstanding works by Francisco Gutiérrez, official court sculptor of Charles III. It reflects the transition from Baroque to Neoclassicism, an evolution that characterizes the period. The triangular and perfectly balanced composition has as its main axis the Blessed Virgin Mary. In a seated position, she holds the body of Jesus, who seems to be asleep, although he is actually dead. The sweetness of the faces of both, the contained pain and suffering of Mary, as well as her gesture when taking the lifeless hand of her Son, distance our sculpture from the Baroque model and bring it closer to Neoclassicism, a style introduced in our country by Francisco Gutiérrez himself upon his return from his long stay in Rome on a scholarship granted by the Academy of San Fernando, where he would become one of its most notable teachers.
PROCESSION
On Saturday of Sorrows, the day before Palm Sunday, at 9:00 p.m. from the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Huerta.
